Hallowtide
Praise Be to Dog. Woof.
Praise Be to Dog. Woof.
Three days at the end of October belong together, and the Dogs have always known it.
Hallowtide is the old name for the stretch that runs from Halloween through All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. Ours is kept by a procession. Three Dogs of one breed walk in a line beneath a Doghouse shrine, halos up, each carrying one thing: a lantern to lead the way, a jack-o'-lantern with a face that means business, and a big iron key at the back.
Every shirt is drawn as a gothic emblem in a single orange ink, blackletter headline and all, so it reads from across a dark street on the thirty-first.
The Dogs stay calm. The pumpkin does the scaring. That has always been the arrangement.
Praise Be to Dog. Woof.
